The Humanities Department offers a comprehensive program of study in German language, lyric diction, and German literature and culture. Courses at Eastman include:
- Elementary (German 101-102) and Intermediate (German 201-202) language sequences
- German Lyric Diction (two semesters for undergraduate Voice majors, one semester for collaborative pianists, conducting students, and graduate Voice students)
- Advanced courses (in German) on cinema, literature, and culture
- Electives on German history, literature, film, and culture taught in English
Additional courses are offered each year in the Modern Language and Cultures (MLC) program on the River Campus. For more information on Eastman courses, see below.
Certain undergraduate and graduate degree programs at Eastman require one semester, two semesters (one full year), or four semesters (two full years) of language study. German language courses (101, 102, 201, 202) are open to all students for Humanities elective credits.
Many students have studied German in High School, have earned AP scores, or have spent time in a German speaking country. If you are unsure about your skill level, please contact Assistant Professor Becker (tbecker@pdc-f5-www-esm.rochester.edu-vs.its.rochester.edu) for advising. Students with prior study or sustained exposure to the language should consult with their instructor for advice on proper placement.
All intermediate and advanced German courses offered at Eastman can qualify towards a Minor or Major in German a the University of Rochester. Students wishing to pursue a Minor or Major in German may do so in conjunction with the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the College of Arts and Sciences (River Campus).
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures also offers a month-long summer study in Berlin. Scholarship funds are available for interested students. Furthermore, the Cologne program offers up to two students the fully funded opportunity to spend a year as a teaching assistant for English classes in Cologne.
Eastman offers conservatory exchange programs with Vienna and Freiburg. Solid language skills will maximize your experience abroad. More information on these programs is available through on these programs is available through the office of Academic Affairs.
Many Eastman students have their first experience in Germany through summer study grants from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). If you have taken at least four semesters of German (or equivalent), you may be eligible for these grants. Visit www.daad.org for more information on short and long-term fellowships for Germany. Your German instructor will be glad to advise you on your DAAD application. Eastman students also regularly apply for Fulbright grants to study in Germany or Austria. Language skills are essential for applications to these countries.
