Italian at Eastman

The Humanities Department offers a program of study in Italian language, diction, and culture. Courses at Eastman include:

• Elementary Italian (Italian 101-102/101G-102G). A two-semester sequence offered yearly. Students may take Italian courses to fulfill a language requirement or as a Humanities elective. Italian language courses are open to all students. However, non-Voice majors may require permission to join the elementary courses. For more information, please reach out to the instructor.
• Italian Lyric Diction (one semester, offered yearly).
• Electives on Italian history, culture and literature (taught in English). Recent courses include:
  • Let’s Eat, Italy: Italian History and Culture through Food
  • Making Italians: Identity, Belonging, and Estrangement in the Modern World
  • Made in Italy: Fashion and Design
  • Italy in Music: From Opera to Rock

Students with little or no previous experience with the language should enroll in Italian 101.

Students who have previously studied Italian should take the online placement test. On your Blackboard home page click on the “Services” tab, then click on “Academics.” You will find a link to the online exam under “Language Placement.”

All students with prior study of or exposure to Italian must consult with their instructor to assess proper placement. Please contact Dr. Filomena Fantarella (ffantarella@pdc-f5-www-esm.rochester.edu-vs.its.rochester.edu) to schedule an appointment. Students who fail to do so and are found to be overqualified for their chosen level may not receive credit for the course.
